Hananoka Shuzo was founded in 1902 in Wataru, Kumamoto Prefecture. Sixth-generation owner Kiyotaka Kanda boldly ended contracts with 69 distributors, and trained at Dassai to completely reinvent the brewery. He created Ubusuna, honouring six essential terroir elements:Terra, Water, Rice, Guidance, Prayer, Environment, with sincere gratitude to the land’s spirit. Using pure Kikuchi River water, pesticide-free rice and the traditional kimoto method, it beautifully captures Wataru’s authentic character and has quickly become one of Japan’s most sought-after premium brands.
